MnSure & Marketplace

MnSure & Marketplace Health Insurance

Minnesota's health insurance marketplace made simple. We help individuals, families, and small businesses find the right plan — and make the most of every dollar.

What is MnSure?

MnSure is Minnesota's official health insurance marketplace, created under the Affordable Care Act. It's where Minnesotans who don't get insurance through an employer or a government program like Medicare or Medicaid can shop for and enroll in health coverage.

Through MnSure, you may qualify for federal premium tax credits or cost-sharing reductions that significantly lower your monthly costs. Many people are surprised by how affordable coverage can be once subsidies are applied.

Who can use MnSure?

Individuals & families

Anyone who doesn't have access to affordable employer-sponsored insurance or government coverage can shop on MnSure.

Self-employed & freelancers

If you work for yourself, MnSure is often your best path to comprehensive, subsidized health coverage.

Small businesses

Businesses with 1–50 employees can offer group coverage through MnSure's Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP).

People between jobs

Losing job-based coverage triggers a Special Enrollment Period — you don't have to wait for open enrollment.

Understanding your plan options

MnSure offers plans in four metal tiers. We'll help you understand the trade-offs so you choose the right fit for your health needs and budget.

Bronze

Lowest monthly premium, highest out-of-pocket costs. Best if you're generally healthy and want protection against major medical events.

Silver

Moderate premiums and cost-sharing. The only tier eligible for cost-sharing reductions — often the best value for qualifying households.

Gold

Higher premiums, lower out-of-pocket costs. Good if you use healthcare regularly and want predictable expenses.

Platinum

Highest premiums, lowest out-of-pocket costs. Best for people with significant, ongoing medical needs.

When can you enroll?

Open Enrollment

Runs each fall (typically November 1 – January 15). This is when anyone can sign up or switch plans for the coming year.

Special Enrollment Period

Triggered by qualifying life events: losing job-based coverage, getting married, having a baby, moving, or changes in income. You typically have 60 days to enroll.

Medical Assistance & MinnesotaCare

If your income qualifies, you may be eligible for Medicaid (Medical Assistance) or MinnesotaCare — these programs are available year-round with no enrollment window.

Not sure where to start?
